All applications received will be assessed against pre-set minimum criteria and sifted according to evidence of relevant competencies. Candidates deemed suitable will be required to undertake a half-day assessment. At this assessment, there will be a written exercise involving the use of IT skills, a group exercise involving the discussion of a case and an ability test.  You will also be able to meet existing Parole Board members and find out more about the work of the Parole Board.

Candidates will be assessed on their performance at the half-day assessment centre and those deemed suitable will be invited to interview.

If you are selected for interview, we may need to carry out inquiries into your nationality, health, and other matters to ensure that you are qualified for appointment.  To enable these inquiries we may need to see your original birth certificate and/or passport.

A list of candidates who are deemed suitable after interview will be presented to the Justice Secretary, who will make the final decision on who to appoint.

We will seek references for successful candidates before their appointment is confirmed but only after provisional decision to appoint has been taken. It is therefore in your own interest to provide all requested details in the Referees section of the Application Form.

Selection Decisions

The Selection Panel, which includes an independent assessor, will consider all applications on merit and will employ an open and transparent process in determining and recommending the candidates considered most suitable for this appointment.  The selection process will be run in line with guidelines issued by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments.

Training

During the first 2 months of their membership of the Board, new members are required to undertake induction training to attend one or two panels as observers before sitting as full panel member. This training is mandatory.  No member may commence Parole Board duties without having completed the training in full.

Nationality

These are reserved posts.  You should be a UK national.  You should normally have been resident in the United Kingdom for three years preceding your application and will need proof of British birth or nationalisation (birth certificate or nationalisation certificate).

Restrictions

Any UK National can apply to become a Parole Board member but if a candidate is currently an employee of the Ministry of Justice (including the Prison Service) they would need to resign their post should they be successful and wish to become a member.

Rehabilitation of Offenders Act

Offences deemed spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act do not have to be declared.

Code of Conduct

In keeping with the recommendation made by the Nolan Committee on Standards in Public Life, you are asked to provide details of any significant political activity you have undertaken in the last five years.  This is primarily to enable future monitoring of applicants and appointees to public appointments to be carried out, and it will not be used as a selection criterion.

All members are required to abide by the Board's Code of Conduct, a copy of which is supplied to all members.

Equal Opportunity

The Ministry of Justice is committed to making appointments based on merit and welcomes applications from candidates regardless of ethnic origin, religious belief, gender, sexual orientation, disability or other irrelevant factors.

To ensure this policy is working and to be able to take steps to ensure further progress is made to achieving equal opportunities, we need to know about the race, ethnic origin, age range and gender of people who apply for these positions.

We therefore ask candidates to complete the monitoring questions.  The information provided will be used to monitor the recruitment process only.  It will not be made available to the Selection Panel or affect the outcome of your application in any way.
