Recruitment

What we do

We make tough judgements based on facts and painstaking risk assessment.

Public Protection is our foremost concern.

Can you take difficult decisions?

Parole Board members are appointed by the Justice Secretary. Their task is to protect the public and successfully reintegrate prisoners into the community. Members carefully assess the risks associated with the early release of prisoners. The impact of our decisions can be far-reaching and serious. The role carries with it a big responsibility and the decisions are often difficult, but with that responsibility comes the reward of a fascinating and fulfilling job well done.

We are required and consider it best practice to include people with the following expertise on our panels, including: serving and retired High Court and Circuit judges, psychiatrists, psychologists, probation officers, and independent (lay) members, who bring a wide range of experiences and skills.

Part time independent members play a vital role in bringing the voice of the public to the Parole Board and we do our best to ensure that the Parole Board reflects society. We want to create the most diverse membership we can, including people from all walks of life. In particular we want all Parole Board members to have a genuine perspective of victims concerns and issues.

The Parole Board is currently made up of 170 members, including a part-time chair, a part-time judicial vice-chair, full-time and part-time independent (lay) members and part-time judicial, psychiatrist, psychologist, probation and criminologist members. The Board is supported by a Chief Executive and 70 staff.
