Parole Board members are appointed by the Justice Secretary. Members carefully assess the risks associated with the release of prisoners. Their task, first and foremost, is to protect the public. The impact of our decisions can be far-reaching and serious. The role carries with it a big responsibility and the decisions are often difficult, but with that responsibility comes the reward of a fascinating and fulfilling job.
We are required and consider it best practice to include people with the following expertise on our panels, including: serving and retired High Court and Circuit judges, consultant psychiatrists, chartered forensic psychologists and probation officers. It is also vital that we include independent (lay) members, who bring a wide range of experiences and skills.
Part-time independent members play a vital role in bringing the voice of the public to the Parole Board and we do our best to ensure that the Parole Board reflects the society it serves. We want to create the most diverse membership we can, including people from all walks of life. In particular we want all Parole Board members to have a genuine perspective of victims' concerns and issues.
Many people who have become independent members had not considered this type of work before. However, many have found that they have the transferrable skills that make them ideal Board members. Please read the information on this site and, in particular, look at the core competencies. You can also try our interactive case study.
