The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman investigates complaints from prisoners and those subject to probation supervision, or those upon whom reports have been written. The Ombudsman is completely independent of both the Prison Service and the National Probation Service. The Ombudsman is also responsible for investigating all deaths of prisoners and residents of probation hostels and immigration detention accommodation.

Inside every prison there is an Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) a group of ordinary members of the public doing an extraordinary job. IMB members are independent and unpaid. They monitor the day-to-day life in their local prison and ensure that proper standards of care and decency are maintained.

The Prisoners' Families Helpline is a free and confidential service for anyone who is affected by the imprisonment of a close family member or friend. The Helpline is a consortium of 3 organisations and co-ordinated by Action for Prisoners' Families.

The Prison Advice & Care Trust (pact) is an independent charity which supports people affected by imprisonment. PACT work with children and families of prisoners, and with prisoners inside and on release.

The Prisoners' Advice Service is an independent registered charity. PAS provides legal advice and information to prisoners in England and Wales regarding their rights, particularly the application of the Prison Rules and conditions of imprisonment.
